A unique musical style, based on the purity of pre-war folk, fitted into a modern scenario.

"CEPA" OUT NOW!

Cepa compiles heartfelt interpretations of traditional tonadas and waltzes from Venezuela’s musical past. A beautiful rendition of deeply emotional yet minimalistic compositions from artists that have receded, almost lost in the consciousness of another era.

The album draws inspiration from two musical worlds that reflect the artist’s roots: Venezuelan tonadas and waltzes with jazz. Cepa’s sound was conceived by joining these two styles of music with Vincent’s trademark guitar sound, which utilizes saturation and feedback from valve amplifiers in a melodic way, so as to explore a new approach to playing this autochthonous music.

Vincent Pino

Venezuelan born guitarist Vincent Pino is based in Amsterdam where he performs and composes musical scores for films, documentaries, and theatrical performances.

Vincent’s musical style blends the purity of folk (South and North American) with Jazz and Blues. He can move effortlessly from swampy Mississippi delta country blues to hillbilly Dixieland. From the mountains of the Andes and the sounds of Chacarera and Zamba, to the plains of Venezuela and the rhythms of Joropo. From the Archtop chordal flare played in Brooklyn NYC in the 1920s to the stomp of the 1930s Brooklyn.

A purist at heart, it's very clear to Vincent that the roots of his musical influences be honored, and the blend with modernity carried out with delicacy and care.

In Amsterdam, Vincent plays with eclectic bands including Supercity (where he was a founding member). In 2018 he founded The Hotsie Totsies, a swing jazz band that plays at Lindy Hop dance events, workshops, and contests.

He has composed the musical scores for various Dutch documentaries (Shout!Koning MalikAfrica naar Assen, and De man die ales kan), as well as for the theatrical hit 100% Amsterdam.

Most recently, Vincent participated as a guitarist and arranger for the Rotterdam Theater’s dance production of Alida Dors’ PRIMISI. From March to October of 2022, he toured and performed with the ensemble across The Netherlands, with over 30 presentations.

Well-travelled music

Vincent started playing guitar at the age of eight. As he grew up, he spent time living in Philadelphia, USA before returning to Caracas, Venezuela. Aside from his father, early South American influences include the Cuatro player Freddy Reyna, and violinist & luthier Pablo Canela.

North American influences include the pre-war Delta Blues artists as well as East coast Jazz and West Coast Blues, and the music of Eddy Lang, Carl Kress, Dick McDonough, George van Eps, Freddie Greene and Allan Reuss. Vincent has also spent time listening to European classical music, becoming particularly inspired by baroque and impressionists composers.

Vincent attended Conservatories in Venezuela for Classical, Jazz, and improvisational music, later settling in the Netherlands where he also attended the Conservatory of Utrecht.
